Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is an evidence-based nutrition service provided by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) aimed at preventing, delaying, or managing chronic disease. Like general nutrition counseling, MNT is an ongoing evaluation of your overall health status where we make specific, measurable, achievable, and realistic goals based on your unique nutrition needs. Medical Nutrition Therapy is an effective disease management tool as it lessens chronic disease risk, slows disease progression, reduces symptoms and improves quality of life.

What are the benefits of Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is an evidence-based counseling approach built on medical research looking at how food and nutrition affects the body. With the guidance of a Registered Dietitian, Medical Nutrition Therapy can significantly improve disease-related indicators (blood pressure, lab results, hemoglobin A1c, weight, etc.), alleviate some disease symptoms, increase quality of life, and reduce your risk of other diseases. Having a health condition can be scary, but Medical Nutrition Therapy may be able to alleviate some of the stress and confusion that often accompany a complex condition.

What is a Medical Nutrition Therapy session like?

During the initial appointment, we comprehensively evaluate your health status and assess your nutritional needs. We will take a close look at what medical conditions you may have, your family history, conditions you may be at risk for, and several other indicators to identify a nutrition problem or something you’re struggling with. Together, we create a specific plan with goals and strategies related to the problem we identify. Breaking down larger goals and objectives into smaller, more manageable ones helps us see the big picture as more doable and approachable – and definitely less overwhelming!

How can I prepare for a Medical Nutrition Therapy session?

In general, Medical Nutrition Therapy sessions require a referral from your physician that states a specific medical diagnosis. When you book an appointment, you will be sent several forms to fill out, and if you need any help filling out the forms or have specific questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Ideally, we would like all the paperwork completed at least 24 hours before your appointment time – this helps us focus more on assessment, goals, and getting to know one another rather than going through paperwork during our session. Of course, we want you to be comfortable and relaxed so if you need any special assistance or accommodations, please let us know and we will be happy to help.
